job title

fws Subediting Manager

job description

In 2010, we are working to consolidate fws' language, look and feel within the team so that when we create documents that are viewed externally (by the public), the public gets a clear, consistent feel for our identity. Loads of good work done, but more to do.

To do this, we require a strong subediting team member interested in helping to coordinate fws' existing subediting team. Throughout this year, the fws Subediting Manager will organise and motivate a team of six fws volunteer Subeditors to:
  1. create and maintain a fws communications style guide.
  2. manage fws's Website Subeditor to execute a complete subedit (and cut!) of the entire fws website
  3. manage fws's Annual Report Subeditor to subedit fws’ annual report each year (using newly created fws communications style guide to ensure this out-to-the-public document is absolutely 100% error-free and makes an exciting read for fws funders).
  4. manage fws Grants Subeditor to ensure that fws’ grant applications and reports continue to be subedited in a timely manner, according to the requirements of the fws Grants Manager.
  5. manage fws gimme shelter Subeditor to ensure that fws's gimme shelter e-newsletter continues to be produced in a timely manner.
  6. oversee the consolidation of the current fws paraphenalia that goes out to public (fundraising packs, fws about us document, fws corporate sponsorship proposal, etc).
  7. coordinate with General Subeditors, the subediting of up-coming fws paraphernalia such as the fws calendar, fws media kit, fws HR volunteering handbook for Australian-based vols…and any of the upcoming documents the fws team creates (or updates) for external use.

skills & requirements

  1. An interest in all of fws’s prime concerns – education, vulnerable women and children, orphans, environmentally friendly living, HIV-AIDS, health, social welfare, community, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and economically sustainable projects.
  2. Ability to work to set own goals and meet them.
  3. Ability to motivate a team to set goals and meet them.
  4. Ability to meet deadlines, even when other’s input is required (this doesn’t concern you because you plan for other’s input to take time when you set your original goals).
  5. Exceptional writing and subediting skills to ensure the fws projects sound as forward-thinking, energetic, original and all-encompassing as they are.
  6. Ability to work with a number of fws volunteers to ensure the information detailed in any fws communication is accurate and up to date.
  7. An eye for detail that puts vultures to shame – don’t tell readers on page one that fws is supporting “house-mamas” and then tell them on page two that our “house mothers” are important employees.
  8. Ability to move forward with direction from fws President – fws believes getting our message out there is an important element of our day-to-day operations, so we like our communication to be absolutely error free and sounding very much like us in tone and attitude. Help us portray our internally strong identity to the public.
