Our furry & feathered friends
Kesho Leo’s hard working furry friends include goats, cows, chickens and fish. Each plays an important role in the permaculture system at Kesho Leo, creating food and market produce to generate income for Kesho Leo (not to mention poo for our biogas fuel!). These workers help integrate Kesho Leo into the community and are well positioned to lead Kesho Leo’s programs into the future. The figures shown include all on-costs such as tax, superannuation equivalent (PPF) and leave allowances.

Also, if you'd prefer to donate a partial salary, options at checkout start at one week. Easy!
Tanzanian Nurse
(1 year salary and on-costs for half-time employee): $4,000
With the future sustainability of Kesho Leo always in mind, we have included a Tanzanian Nurse in the health team. A Tanzanian nurse will help our volunteer nurse provide health education and consultations in Kiswahili, ensuring that our services are clearly understood and culturally appropriate. They will also translate our health promotion literature so that Kesho Leo residents and the wider community have heath information at their fingertips. The nurse will work out of the Community Health Centre at Kesho Leo and be the first point of contact for mamas, children and the wider community in relation to health issues.
Tanzanian Social Welfare Outreach Worker
(1 year salary and on-costs for half-time employee): $1,240
fws can help improve the lives of the community around Kesho Leo by employing a Tanzanian outreach worker to build up our social welfare outreach program. They would help the volunteer social welfare manager liaise with and support the most vulnerable members in the local community. This role will help build a sustainable network of support that can make a big difference to the lives of our neighbours and friends.
Tanzanian Farm Worker (3 months’ salary and on-costs) $400
The fws permaculture farm continues to burst with yummy organic fruit, veggies and animal products for our residents and income generating markets. As we strive towards economic sustainability, the planting, watering, weeding and learning all about the genius of permaculture takes time. And not to mention spread the word of organic farming through education and practical experience. Your assistance in wages will support our farm workers at what they do best.
Employ and Train local staff
Help us employ and train local staff to work alongside our volunteers.
Tanzanian Builders (3 months’ salary and on-costs): $390
Kesho Leo’s reliance on a hard-working local Tanzanian workforce began from day one of construction back in 2007. fws volunteers continue to value the Kesho Leo workforce as an essential part of the day-to-day running and ongoing development of the village. Sponsoring these wages directly improves the lives of numerous local families and keeps Kesho Leo ticking along smoothly, day-in, day-out.
Askari training (annual): $370
fws is committed to covering the training costs for our local Tanzanian employees. Your donation will help keep our wonderful security team up-to-date with all the latest in security tips and tricks from our contracted private security firm in Arusha.
Social Work Degree for Tanzanian Staff: $400 per year (2 year course)
This two year course will equip Lucas Mayoba with a degree in social work. Lucas has worked as our community development officer for over four years and has already learnt a mountain load from other staff, volunteers and his practical experience. Now, he wants to gain formal qualifications in this field and we would LOVE to support him.
Qualified Caretakers (annual): 2 x $3,400
As Food Water Shelter develops the social outreach program, and gains the License to House Children, we are required by Tanzanian legislation to add 2 qualified child caretakers to support caring for orphans.
Health Insurance for Kesho Leo Workers (annual): $2,000
The National Health Insurance Fund is offered to government and non-government workers, and an insured worker can nominate 6 of their relatives who will also be able to benefit from the scheme. It entitles workers to free health care and some surgeries. We think it would greatly benefit all the full-time Kesho Leo workers and reduce financial stress in times of emergencies.
The everyday living aisle

Many of the things we take for granted are well beyond the reach of the wonderful Tanzanian community living in and around Kesho Leo. Our expert volunteer staff work with local Tanzanian health, social welfare and education organisations and staff to improve circumstances for vulnerable women, children and their families. While everything in the shopping list indirectly supports this work, here are some great ways to send your dollars straight to the people:
Pre-school scholarship places for local children $36 each
Pre-school education is a prerequisite to entering primary school and the annual fees at local schools is $36. While we know many families can manage this cost and gain dignity from paying it themselves, your $36 can provide a scholarship place for a child in the local community whose caregivers would not otherwise be able to pay the fees.
What a simple but powerful hand-up!
With all sponsorships for 2012 sold, we are now looking to class of 2013!
Drawstring Schoolbags $30
Not only would our chekechea and pre-primary children love having a drawstring schoolbag to carry their books to and from school, but these fantastic items can be made right here at Kesho Leo by the Mamas as part of their sewing group activities. We need only to cover the cost of material and drawstrings, and we can get sewing the 50 schoolbags!
School Supplies for Chekechea / Tuition $10? $100? $683? Every bit helps!
The bare the necessities! The chekechea children love to write and draw when learning in the Kesho Leo early education centre. Pencils get chewed up pretty quickly with their busy hands scribbling away. Want to help us with the education essentials of pencils, pens and all things stationary? Help us sharpen the minds of the chekechea children by donating absolutely any amount to these daily necessities!
Kesho Leo Kitty: $10? $20? $30?
Every bit helps!
Choose your own amount to put into the Kesho Leo kitty jar to cover critical general operational costs at Kesho Leo such as building and grounds maintenance, volunteer stipends, wages for our Tanzanian management staff, bank fees, internet fees and office supplies. Your contribution will make Kesho Leo’s managers puurrrrrr with delight!
Bicycle: $150
Our two lovely cows are producing lots of creamy milk for market. Help us get this heavy milk all the way to market by purchasing a bike for our hard working farmers. The $$ will not only buy a bike, but include all those necessary servicing fees and wet weather contingency plans as well.
Plant a Tree at Kesho Leo: $10
Plant a tree at Kesho Leo! Help Kesho Leo expand their food forest and plant more timber trees on the farm to save for the future. Each tree will provide shade, mulch for the shamba, or food for our animals and residents. Our goal is to plant as many trees as were used in the building of Kesho Leo. Help us achieve this goal by sponsoring the planting of a tree at Kesho Leo Village!
Kesho Leo Community Outreach Fund: $10? $100? $683?
Every bit helps!
At
fws, we ensure the benefits of our work reach beyond Kesho Leo to vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the wider community. Our outreach program is designed to provide financial, health and counselling support in cases of poverty, illness and family conflict and violence, to strengthen and support people and families before they reach crisis point. With your support we want to see this fledgling program grow stronger and more widely accessible every year by creating an outreach fund which can be used by the Health, Education and Social Welfare teams as required.
Families for Families sponsorship: $31 per month
To checkout, go to
sponsorships and sign up!
Our Families for Families sponsorship program is looking for new sponsors! This program sponsors the eight families living at Kesho Leo, covering basic living costs like food, water, shelter, education, health costs and a matched savings plan to help set up these families members for a long and bright future. For more information, see our
sponsorships page.
Help our mamas become fully independent
$10? $100? $683? Every bit helps!
Now that our mamas have been at Kesho Leo for four years, they are becoming quite independent. In fact, some of them are even ready to start moving into their own accommodation in the wider community. We are keen to help and thought you might be as well.
In the equipment aisle…
If you like Big Box shops you’ll love our equipment aisle, where you can find a range of equipment for Kesho Leo to satisfy technology, sports, and hardware lovers alike!
Kesho Leo netball team: $100 contributions
The girls are keen to get out and active and have been asking for some netball equipment. So we are on the hunt for two transportable netball rings and a netball. We think this will help boost community morale!
The home improvement aisle…
Kesho Leo’s award winning buildings
are in place, and now that the mamas and children have been living on-site for a year, it’s time to make some improvements! Most of these items will involve hiring local Tanzanian labourers and builders, stretching your dollar further to benefit not only Kesho Leo but also injecting much-needed money and support into the local community.
Additional Water Tanks for livestock
No-one likes to be thirsty and Kesho Leo is desperately in need of additional rainwater harvesting tanks to secure water for their ever increasing livestock. Right now we are in need of two tanks; one for the livestock shed and one for the chicken coop. Moooooo gulp gulp book-book slurp!
Children’s playground: $100 contributions
Currently, Kesho Leo has a basic playground area with two soccer posts. It’s used daily by Kesho Leo’s resident kids, kids attending the Kesho Leo Chekechea (pre-primary school), and the wider community. Your donation could help cover the costs of expanding and maintaining the Kesho Leo playground. Over time, we’d love to install swings, a secure playgroup area, paving, a simple shelter and durable gardens. We'll also include an outdoor area for adults with a herb garden, basic outdoor food preparation and cooking area and an outdoor sitting/education area.
Askari shelter/hut: $450
Kesho Leo’s hard-working security guards (Askari) would really benefit from their own hut to provide shelter and a worker’s retreat as they keep the residents safe and sound.
Safe Storage of Water Tanks: $930
We all know that kids like exploring, and at Kesho Leo it’s no different. Just to make sure our well used water tanks are kept away from curious little fingers we’d love to build a fence around the undersides of our buildings, protecting both our wonderful water tanks and the even more wonderful Kesho Kids.
Our furry & feathered friends…
Kesho Leo’s hard working furry friends include goats, cows, chickens and fish. Each plays an important role in the permaculture system at Kesho Leo, creating food and market produce to generate income for Kesho Leo (not to mention poo for our biogas fuel!). So back up your cyber ute and help out with a sound investment in livestock!
Add a Chicken to Our Flock
For just $10 you can buy Kesho Leo a chook! The chicken that you provide to Kesho Leo will be part of a free range, organic flock of chickens that will help Kesho Leo start up a small egg-selling business. Bgaarrrk!
Chicken Coop Upgrade
A chicken coop at Kesho Leo to house a lovely new flock of chooks will help generate income at Kesho Leo so that someday it can become economically self-sufficient. Kesho's staff and residents will work together to sell organic eggs in town (and enjoy the produce at home!). The chickens will also be employed as part of the permaculture-system pest control program while simultaneously providing manure for the farm. Eggcellent!
One Cow: $100 contributions
Cows are a valuable resource in Tanzania and particularly for a permaculture site like Kesho Leo. Cows provide two important resources, milk and manure; Nutritious milk for the Kesho Leo residents and checkechea kids, and plenty of manure to create gas for cooking using our biogas digestor. The milk is also sold to the local community, generating a steady income for Kesho Leo.
Veterinary supplies and costs for livestock: $50 contributions
Keeping our farm animals fit and happy requires regular supplies of preventative and treatment medications, and the occasional visit from a vet. Moo!
Security and transport (steels and wheels)
Kesho Leo village is not only a home to house mamas and children, it’s the base camp for an ever-growing range of activities include social welfare outreach services, pre-school education, health promotion services, farm production and sales and more. It’s also home to our long-term volunteers holding annual positions as managers of Kesho Leo programs, and to short-term volunteers providing additional skills and services. For all of this wonderful stuff to happen, it is essential that fws provides top-notch security systems and reliable and safe transport.
Food and health care supplies for our security dogs (one month's supply): $70
Man’s best friend also happens to be man’s best security and our two furry patrolmen, Maggie and Knuckle, work the night away making sure everyone sleeps safe and sound. Food and health care supplies will help keep them in tip-top shape for the job!
Kesho Leo vehicle maintenance (monthly): $330
With dusty roads riddled with potholes and donkeys to dodge, our invaluable Hilux Ute and Land Rover are occasionally in need of some tender-loving care to make sure they’re in tip top shape for reliably transporting everything from mamas and kids to goats and charcoal.
Kesho Leo vehicle fuel costs (Donate a tank!): $55
Our trusty old Land Rover and super-dooper Hilux Ute (thanks Planet Wheeler!) are so important for helping Kesho Leo workers and volunteers work their magic. These well-loved vehicles keep the ball rolling day in, day out. So next time you’re filling up, think about filling up for Kesho Leo too!
Askari meals (monthly): $130
The Kesho Leo Askari team (security guards) work hard night and day to keep residents, volunteers and friendly visitors safe.
fws returns the favour by making sure they’re happily fed with maize for ugali (local staple food) and chai (tea).
Call-out security fee: $2,270
In the rare event of a security threat, our specially trained Askari (security guards) are backed-up by an Arusha based private security firm. With their rapid response time, the residents of Kesho Leo and
fws volunteers can follow our carefully planned emergency protocol knowing the additional security is hot on their heels. We’d love to have this stashed in the bank knowing that we can cover emergencies without drawing money from other activities at Kesho Leo!
