Kesho Leo has two fishponds, both of them brimming with tilapia (a high-protein fish local to East Africa). However, harvesting this fish has proven slightly difficult for the Kesho mamas and staff.

Don, our Kesho Permaculture Manager, knew he was onto something when he met a self-described “fish guru”. Squashing everyone into the back of the ute, Don and our mamas went on an excursion to the fish guru’s home to brush-up on fish farming. The fish guru taught our mamas all sorts of things including what to feed the fish, how frequently to harvest the fish and how to catch the slippery little things!

The Kesho mamas returned to Kesho Leo very excited about their new knowledge and set to work modifying our current net to improve their chances of regularly harvesting lots of fish. Our current net was long and narrow but needs to be more like a square, so the mamas got out their scissors, needles and thread to adjust its dimensions. The net is still a work in progress but we look forward to the next harvest!
