position purpose

The role of the fws Network and Database Administrator is to provide operational support for and management of computer networks to ensure they run efficiently, and ensure the performance, integrity and security of the fws database. This role will have responsibility for database administration, hardware support and hardware purchasing. The IT networks will include the internet as well as a specific fws network system.    

responsibilities

  • Install, configure and maintain PCs, networking equipment and network operating systems for all fws employees (where possible)
  • Monitor and configure networks to optimise performance and resolve faults 
  • Undertake recovery action in the event of a system failure 
  • Establish and control system access and security levels 
  • Provide training and support for system software, preferably on-line 
  • Implement and co-ordinate housekeeping procedures, including system back-ups, setting up user accounts, monitoring file access etc 
  • Plan and implement maintenance and upgrades for system software and hardware 
  • Maintain peripheral devices where relevant, such as printers and scanners
  • Establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security
  • Monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to 'front end' users
  • Developing, managing and testing backup and recovery plans
  • Ensuring that storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures are functioning correctly
  • Capacity planning
  • Working closely with the IT manager and the broader IT team
  • Aid in minimising fws exposure and risk on projects with solid and relevant IT advice

key performance indicators

  • Develops and maintains a relevant, easy to use database to support the activities of fws
  • Develops and maintains a dedicated fws IT system 
  • Ensures fws users, and particularly the Board and Management Committee, have the correct operating hardware to assist in their roles
  • Works with the IT team to ensure there are no hardware barriers in the development of fws IT systems and processes 
  • Resolves and/or escalates issues to the IT Manager in a timely fashion
  • Understands how to communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully
  • Sends a weekly update of hardware and database developments to the fws IT Manager

  • Enjoy a highly technical role
  • Able to think logically and analytically in a troubleshooting and problem-solving environment 
  • Remain calm under high pressure and stressful situations 
  • Good oral and written communication skills and is an active listener
  • Are able to quickly understand complex issues 
  • Enjoy working as part of a team 
  • Are willing to continuously update IT skills and knowledge
  • A friendly personality and the patience to explain things to non-technically-minded people 
  • Ability to prioritise workload in liaison with fws IT Manager
  • Social interest in the less fortunate
