position purpose

To work with Tanzanian staff to design and deliver effective education services at Kesho Leo children’s village. The position will have responsibility for the management of all education programs, relevant local staff and short-term OS education volunteers throughout the year.

Responsibilities

  • To plan and implement daily early-learning bilingual programs.
  • To plan and implement daily after school tuition for lower and middle school learners.
  • To plan and implement weekly adult education classes.
  • Ensure that education programs at all levels include environmental and health education.
  • Utilise local resources/curriculum and Kesho Leo health and permaculture volunteers to plan a thorough cross section of learning activities that utilise all environments within Kesho Leo.
  • Model best practice to Tanzanian teachers to ensure the development of:
    • effective (positive reinforcement) management skills
    • effective (student-centered) teaching methodology
    • effective (integrative/hands-on) classroom planning skills
    • innovation and creativity of thought.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with the Kesho Leo Community, employees and other local education communities, specifically Engosengiu primary school and Edmund Rice Secondary School.
  • Fit out education centre with equipment and resources if not already achieved and develop resource/expenditure inventory process.
  • Perform enrolments at the beginning of the year, informing parents and the wider community as to the education programs provided at Kesho Leo.
  • Report to parents throughout the year and liaise with local primary school regarding student progress.
  • Provide a fortnightly report on educational achievements at Kesho Leo to the fws education manager.
  • Provide good news articles, updates to the gimme shelter Editor to use in the monthly fws newsletter and maintain/participate in the fws team blog site.
  • Provide updates of student achievements four times a year to our sponsorship co-coordinator to keep our donors informed of students’ progress.
  • Meet financial reporting requirements as directed, but specifically from the fws Funding Manger, the fws Program Manager and the fws Treasurer, working with the fws Bursar locally.
  • Develop or champion specific education initiatives as they arise.
  • Be conscious of security requirements in a developing environment.
  • Support the team to do site tours and media interviews as required.
  • Work with fws Sponsorships Program Manager to facilitate the creation of any material required for the marketing/maintenance of fws's various sponsorship programs.

key performance indicators

  • Success in pre-literacy skills (English and Kiswahili), pre-numeracy skills and thinking skills by students attending the Kesho Leo early learning centre.
  • Success in English, Mathematics and creativity of thought by students attending Kesho Leo after school tuition.
  • Positive engagement in environmental and health classes by children and adults in the Kesho Leo and wider community.
  • Successful promotion within the community of life long learning and of the value of education within the home.
  • Regular planned updates to management regarding the education programs running at Kesho Leo.
  • Positive feedback from the local community and schools regarding students’ progress.

skills & requirements

  • Teaching qualifications and experience in a variety of educational settings
  • Experience in bilingual teaching, early learning or adult education desirable
  • Experience working in a developing country
  • Innovation in educational design and an ability to train the Trainer
  • International Drivers License and willingness to drive a 4WD vehicle in emergency situations
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Computer efficiency in the Internet
  • Microsoft Word
  • A willingness to seek fluency in Kiswahili
  • Senior first aid and resuscitation, as a minimum
