The Kesho Leo farm employees proudly welcomed a brand new member to
their ever growing family last week. The beautiful baby boy, 'Eugene',
was born at 9:30am on Wednesday May 4 after a very easy, healthy labour.
Having given the mama goat time to clean up her little one, fws
permaculture manager Lindsay and Kesho Leo farm employee Moses helped
encourage the newborn to suckle - and suckle he did as mama tucked into a
well earned stash of maize husk and grass.
The Kesho Leo
shamba is now home to 3 milking goats, their
primary job being to provide milk for the mamas and kids all year round.
To make sure this steady supply is maintained the female goats are bred
twice a year with between one and two months between birthing and
pregnancy. Milking goats are also great money making enterprises. Whilst
the female goats are being kept for their milk, the rams fetch a great
price in town as studs for other milking goat farms. With one adult ram
aleady in residence this little baby will wait about six months before
venturing our into the world and finding his place as king of his own
palace, not to mention earning some extra shillings to support his
family back home.
As with all the furry Kesho leo residents, these bovidean members kindly
supply waste that does wonders for the biogas system, helping to boil
that delicious milk to make it ready to serve at breakfast time.
As
for this particular kid, Eugene is settling in very well to his new
found family and is quickly learning the ropes of life as a contributing
member of the Kesho Leo community.
