Kesho Krew (in Tanzania) and fws Communications Team (in Australia)

position purpose

To ensure the reliable delivery of a regular flow of information (written and photographic) from the Kesho Krew to fws Australia for the purpose of motivating fws supporters about progress and to fuel funding, market our project, provide supporters information about our progress and disseminate essential information to fws volunteers.
 
Specifically, the material created by the written and photographic material provided by the Kesho Leo Communications Manager is essential to ensuring the ongoing production of:
  • fws grants applications
  • fws grant reporting
  • fws f4f sponsorship material
  • other fws sponsorship material
  • fws media (assist in compiling information from Kesho Leo for editorial coverage or press releases, and coordinating photographic and interview requirements of media for stories to promote fws and Kesho Leo children’s village)
  • fws website
  • fws blog
  • fws corporate sponsorship document
  • fws volunteer handbooks
  • fws membership forms
  • fws e-cards
  • fws calendars
  • fws about us info pamphlets
  • fws educational PDFs (such as permaculture PDFs that are downloadable from fws website)
  • fws PowerPoint presentations at events and talks
  • gimme shelter e-newsletter
  • fws organisational chart
  • fws marketing and funding drives (e.g. Final Founding Fifty funding drive, Bread & Butter Brigade etc)
  • fws social marketing tools like Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/people/Fws-Foodwatershelter/577278081) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/fwskesho)

responsibilities

Photography

  • Continue to build the essential fws digital library (which supports the creation of all fws marketing, funding, operational material) by taking regular photos of all Kesho key areas in action, including:
    • mamas & kids
    • health
    • education
    • social welfare
    • building
    • fit-out
    • labourers
    • permaculture
    • community days
    • excursions
    • site tours
    • volunteers
    • volunteer village 
    • fws-Arusha meetings
    • all milestone Kesho events (i.e. mama move in, welcoming our first orphans etc)
  • Each month, caption, tag, and upload these photos to a CD. Send this CD to Australia-based fws Photo Editor, to ensure that she can add the photos to fws’s precious digital photo library.
  • Liaise with fws Photo Editor about photos (resolutions, photo captions, photo tags etc) when they are received, answering Photo Editor’s queries to enable latest photos to be added to the library, appropriately.
  • Fulfill any spontaneous 'photo' requests from fws-Australia (such as 'Oh, we need a photo of four kids climbing a ladder, each one on a different rung…') that may be required for specific communications material.

Website & online

Grants

  • Liaise with fws-Australia Grants Team and Communications Team to fulfill any specific photographic requirements for the creation of grant applications and grant reports, by deadline.
  • Liaise with fws-Australia Grants Team and Communications Team to round up Kesho volunteers required to submit written requirements).
  • Be available to fact-check, or arrange fact-check with relevant Kesho volunteers before these materials are sent to the funders/potential funders.

gimme shelter e-newsletter

  • Liaise with fws-Australia Communications Team to fulfill all specific photographic and writing requirements for the monthly e-newsletter gimme shelter, that goes out to 1,200 fws supporters and is their only form of direct updating on the progress being made by fws-Australia, and the Kesho Krew on the ground.
  • Liaise with fws-Australia Communications Team to round up all Kesho volunteers to submit written requirements every month, by deadlines outlined by gimme shelter subeditor.
  • Be available to fact-check, and arrange fact-checking by all Kesho volunteers before gimme shelter is sent out to the fws database on the last Friday of each month.

Media

  • Liaise with fws Media Manager and assist in compiling information from Kesho Leo for editorial coverage or press releases. This involves organising information and quotes from Kesho Leo based volunteers within specific deadlines.
  • Keep track of any local media interest about fws in Tanzania, and help to coordinate any media visits conducted on-site at Kesho Leo.

Sponsorship programs (possibly running 2-3 at a time in 2010 – TBC)

  • Liaise with fws-Australia Sponsorship Team and Communications Team to fulfill all specific photographic and writing requirements for the promo material created to launch of any fws sponsorship programs (How Sponsorship Works, Sign Up & Pay Up Forms, Meet Those You Sponsor letters).
  • Liaise with fws-Australia Sponsorship Team and Communications Team to fulfill all specific photographic requirements to produce regular (mostly at three-month intervals) progress reports for each sponsorship program.
  • Liaise with fws-Australia Sponsorship Team and Communications Team to round up Kesho volunteers required to submit information for both of the above areas.
  • Fact check personally (and/or arrange fact-checking with relevant Kesho volunteers) before any of these materials are sent to the funders/potential funders.

fws info & promotional material

  • Liaise with fws-Australia Communications Team to fulfill all specific photographic and writing requirements for the info & promo material fws creates regularly to fuel funding, disseminate essential information to volunteers or the public, and market our project, such as:
    • fws corporate sponsorship document
    • fws e-cards
    • fws calendars
    • fws about us info pamphlets
    • fws PowerPoint presentations at events and talks
    • fws volunteer handbooks
    • fws membership forms
    • fws organisational chart
    • photographic & interview requirements of media for stories to promote fws and Kesho Leo children’s village
    • fws educational PDFs (such as permaculture PDFs that are downloadable from fws website)
    • fws marketing and funding drives (e.g. Final Founding Fifty funding drive etc)
  • Fact check personally (and/or arrange fact-checking with relevant Kesho volunteers) before any of these materials are sent to the funders/potential funders.
  • Coordinate any local Tanzanian promotion of fws as necessary (i.e. ensuring attendance at any relevant festivals or market days, networking with other local NGOs to share information about sustainable practices, creating and/or following up on any local media opportunities that promote the work of fws and Kesho Leo children’s village etc).

key performance indicators

  • Kesho communications material (photos, info, writing) gets to fws-Australia by deadline.
  • Kesho volunteers are managed to contribute to fws communications in an organised, planned way, so they enjoy the experience.
  • fws-Australia, with your input, continues to produce communications material that is outstanding in its field.

skills & requirements

  • An ability to take arresting photographs of all areas of the Kesho project.
  • Vibrant, energetic, motivating, heart-warming, innovative writing skills (we don’t do trite and schmaltzy – we do down to earth, original and authentically engaging…)
  • Good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign will be an advantage.
  • Super-powers when it comes to working to deadline and ensuring those around you also deliver to deadline via your exceptional organisational skills.
  • Flare for juggling competing deadlines – you will be working with a number of Australian-based team managers and their various, sometimes overlapping deadlines.
  • A willingness to carry out the role using your own laptop computer, quality digital camera, and dictaphone (for interviews).
  • An appreciation for the fact that this is the job of a lifetime.
