fws HR Manager
position purpose
The HR Manager has responsibility for the administration of the human resources policies, procedures and programs within fws. The role will cover and impact a number of areas, including volunteer relations, training and development, organisational development, and recruitment, retention and performance management. The role deals exclusively with volunteers – the entire fws team – and will focus on both OS-based and Australian-based volunteers.
responsibilities
- Overseeing the Australian-based Volunteer Manager and OS-based Volunteer Manager to ensure fws’s basic procedures around recruiting, supporting and where required, facilitating happy departures, are fulfilled
- Creating and refining fws HR policies around recruitment, retention and performance management, and then ensuring implementation
- Ensuring that all fws volunteers (OS-based and Australian-based) have Position Descriptions for their roles
- Ensuring that all Australian-based volunteers are aware of fws’s three-month trial period, monthly phone contact, and yearly review system, and that these systems are being implemented appropriately
- Ensuring that all fws volunteers receive a thank you, signed digitally by fws president on the first day of National Volunteers Week each year
- Ensuring that all Australian-based volunteers are contacted by phone for a monthly check-in/trouble shoot by the Australian-based Volunteer Team
- Occasionally, the HR Manager will need to facilitate happy farewells for fws volunteers, when it is agreed that it is no longer mutually beneficial for a volunteer to work with fws
- Ensure that all fws documentation regarding volunteers (website, volunteer handbooks, volunteer application forms etc) are kept up-to-date by OS-based Volunteer Team and Australian-based Volunteer Team
- Be aware of local, state and federal employment guidelines and their application to fws
- Work with other key fws staff to ensure the health and safety of all volunteers, by developing and implementing relevant policies

- Ensure outstanding fws positions are filled in a timely manner
- Develop a volunteer HR management tool, and report regularly to the Board and Management Committee on volunteer concerns, developments, feedback etc
- Track and analyse fws retention and turnover, offering methods to minimise
- Develop and implement a simple performance management strategy to maximise volunteer output
- Implement a robust HR filing system
- Finalise and control PD’s for all fws roles
- Produce a monthly report showing all volunteer contacts, feedback, thank you messages etc

- Experience in recruiting, retention and exiting staff
- Excellent communication skills to confidently work with fws volunteers
